HVAC Certification Requirements
 
Summary of requirements for self certified installations:
  • Contractor must be licensed with the Arizona Registrar of Contractor to perform heating, cooling, and ventilation work.

  • Contractor must be an approved ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) Quality Assured Contractor, either Residential Service & Installation(RSI) or New Home Construction.

    ACCA QA Program Participation Requirements:
    1. Complete the applicable program orientation
    2. Comply with QA Elements
    3. Employee technician(s) are EPA certified for handling refrigerants and Nate certified for installations.
    4. Complete and submit the QA Program Compliance Checklist & Affaidavit(Application)
    5. Complete and submit the QA Program Participant Agreement
    6. Pay applicable fees ($550.00 non-member, $475.00 ACCA member)
    7. Satisfy the QA Program annual re-assessment to promote ongoing compliance
    8. Notify the QA Administrator of any instances of material non-compliance with the QA Elements.
    9. Cooperate with the QA Administrator in obtaining information necessary to validate that the Participant operations remain compliant


  • Installer (Technician) or Supervisor performing work must be Nate(North American Technician Excellence) certified for installations.

    Nate certification requirements:
    1. Pass KATE for Core Exam. The core tests a candidates general knowledge, construction knowledge, and HVACR specific knowledge in the areas of: Safety, Tools, Basic Construction, Using Basic Science, Achieving Desired Conditions, Taking Temperature and Humidity Measurements, Basic Electrical.
    2. Pass Core Installation. Tests a candidates general knowledge, construction knowledge, and HVACR specific knowledge in the areas of safety, soft skills, heat transfer, comfort, and electrical.

Contractor also must perform Manual J, S, and D calculations and maintain record of these for a minimum of two years beyond installation date. Person performing these calculations must have proof of training on software used.

Contractor must also record one unit's model number. Split systems record condensing unit model number.

Inspectors still have authority to perform their inspections if they deem necessary.

  • Make sure and have your ACCA information handy.
  • After signup, please fax or e-mail a scanned copy of your ACCA accreditation certificate to ACT.
    • Fax the document(s) to at ACT 520-624-3049
    • E-mail a scan of the document(s) to subs@actaz.net
    Your proof will be reviewed and approved, usually within 48 hours.

  • Add your employees to the Employee list.
    • Once your employees are added, click the 'Add HVAC certification' for each employee. Fill in the employee's NATE ID and Expires date and click Add.
    • Once all employees are added (you can always add more later), please log into the NATE website and print your technicians list for proof and fax or e-mail it to ACT.
      • Fax the document(s) to at ACT 520-624-3049
      • E-mail a scan of the document(s) to subs@actaz.net
      Your proof will be reviewed and the certification will be marked Active within aproximately 48 hours.
  • Once the certification is Active, you will be able to purchase HVAC permits for this employee.
